Novi vek je deo istorije čovečanstva od Kolumbovog otkrića (1492) do Oktobarske revolucije (1917). Za početak Novog veka uzima se i 1453. godina (tj. pad Vizantije), a kao kraj Novog veka i Prvi svetski rat (1914-1918).
Novi vek počinje otkrićima u oblasti nauke,tehnike, privrede i upoznavanja sopstvene planete. Nova tehnička otkrica kao što su pronalazak kompasa i durbina, ili izgradnja karavela (nova vrsta broda) omogućila su ubrzana geografska otkrića.

Nauka u srednjem veku nije vise pod direktnim uticajem crkve. Ističu se matematičari i astronomi Nikola Kopernik, Galileo Galilej i Đordano Bruno.
Nikola Kopernik- bio je poljski astronom, matematičar, pravnik,lekar i ekonomista, prvi naučnik koji je formulisao heliocentričnu teoremu svemirskih tela.
Galileo Galilej-bio je italijanski astronom, fizičar, matematičar i filozof, čija su istraživanja postavila temelje modernoj mehanici i fizici.
Đordano Bruno-bio je italijanski filozof i astronom. Pogubljen je 17.februara 1600. godine u Rimu, jer su njegove ideje bile protiv učenja katoličke crkve.
